First baby?

Do you remember the first time you bought them home?

The first toys you picked out?

The first things they destroyed?

This is our first baby.

He is a Samoyed.

He is now 11yo.

He is gentle, soft, fun, frustrating and he doe the woo woo woo- as many spitz breeds do. He bolts the minute that he gets the opportunity, but loves to be around us. If he gets too bothered, he just goes and finds a quiet spot all on his own.

We bought him home when he was a wee puppy, he now stands at 32" at the shoulder- weighs around the 32kg mark. He is all fluff!

His favourite food when he was a puppy was socks and stockings. I was forever fishing socks out of his mouth- something I had never thought id do as a fur parent!

The first time I had visited a dog show I was washing my hands after patting the fluffy friends, then a month later was fishing things out of my puppies own mouth!

He will never be replaced or forgotten, although he has been demoted by 4 other human babies... but that is what happens unfortunately.

Hes off for a groom later this month, so will post some pics after that.

I seemed to have missed November... I know that I did a blog post in there, but in my life November just has seemed to skip past me.

its been busy here in this wonderful household.

Doing what- I actually dont know. I have done very little sewing (shock!)

I have spent some time at the dentist... I know that! My bank account knows that too!

Some time knitting- Acacia- very quick and easy knit. In Bendigo Woolen Mills Spring Cotton.

taking kids to sport... cricket, swimming and karate

My biggest boy should be going up another grade soon- so proud of his efforts!

And now its December, and we are meant to be putting up the Christmas tree!

Life- climbing stairs

Not far from me is a national park

And in that national park is a set of steps.

Its actually a tribute to the Kokoda track.

No doubt they are not as gruiling as what our grandfathers climbed in the 1940's. But hey, it sure does work my legs!

All sorts of people climb these stairs. People who need to lose weight, mothers with babies strapped to their backs, 80yo's from the local bush walking clubs, footy players, fitness enthusiasts... and us!

I have actually really enjoyed it. The first time I did it, it took me over 20min. And I didnt make it to the top. I got a stitch. he next time I was more careful about when I ate, and set on up there. Now I am climbing them in about 14min. (mind you that is just the steps, not the hike to the steps)

I took my boys with me on this occasion. They didnt even break out a sweat! Mind you there was alot of sillyness on the way down, so took alot longer than I had hoped.

But we had fun anyway!

Life- getting active

As a mum of a few kids, I find it really hard to spend time on getting active. The time I spend sitting I could be doing crunches- but who really wants to do that?. I do enjoy walking, but who wants to walk when you have 2 girls saying "mum im tired, im hungry, when are we going to the park".

I was inspired by a couple of friends who have made it work for them. They are getting out there and improving their health, one day at a time.

So I am giving it a go.

I am trying to find what works for me.

I don't want to spend money

I don't want to hurt myself either, or make myself sick (I don't cope with that). I don't want to lack oxygen to my brain by being that puffed that i cant breathe. But I also want to see results!

So what do I have at hand..
A skipping rope.
Wii fit
runners
tracksuits pants and shorts
water

So I have been doing the Wii fit. Just a little each day
This is my cheer squad. They love watching me play the games. and its not a massive workout but it does get me moving on days where I cant get outside. It also does set a good example to them too.

I have also been walking. Just a little every few days where time allows. Such as before dinner when the man is home and can watch kids and dinner.

My downfalls are chocolate and chips. And yes I am still eating them, but only 1 piece instead of .... or 3 chips when there is not much left so I dont eat the whole packet.Lets see how we go...

I knit!

This is another Tikki design: Jane. Seamless, top down knit. Very easy to knit too!

8ply by Cleckeaton Country, stitcks by Knit Picks22" chest, 7yo length for my wee tall baby girl.

Ive called it my lollie Jane, as its so bright!Its the perfect little cardie for spring weather, on its own, over a dress, over a long sleeved top.

The only thing I would suggest that if you want to make one, if you have a pair of 30cm circular needles, use them, or gain a pair. I used magic loop on the sleeves and my tension was tight because of this, making it quite firm around my daughters arms.But really, that is a problem I can live with!

I found this on Facebook. I dont know who wrote it, so I cannot give credit to who wrote it, but it defiantly wasnt me! I really like it.

A while back, at the entrance of a gym, there was a picture of a very thin and beautiful woman. The caption was "This summer, do you want to be a mermaid or a whale?"

The story goes, a woman (of clothing size unknown) answered the following way:

"Dear people, whales are always surrounded by friends (dolphins, seals, curious humans), they are sexually active and raise their children with great tenderness.
They entertain like crazy with dolphins and eat lots of prawns. They swim all day and travel to fantastic places like Patagonia, the Barents Sea or the coral reefs of Polynesia.
They sing incredibly well and sometimes even are on cds. They are impressive and dearly loved animals, which everyone defend and admires.

Mermaids do not exist.

But if they existed, they would line up to see a psychologist because of a problem of split personality: woman or fish?

Yes I knitted!

And yes I played yardage chicken!

this is what I had left over from 2X 200g of Utiku yarn.

But the results were super cute!

A little knitted vest/ jumper with a hood and a pocket!

The little cutie pie heard me rejoice when I finished this knit (I am not a quick knitter- so it took longer than usual), and jumped out of bed to try and on and model in her PJs

Isnt she just georgeous!

I must admit, my little girl is so beautiful- without mother bias!

A while ago I went on a hunt in op-shops for old tees with lycra in them

why?

to make knickers!

And on top of the old tees, knit fabric scraps (of descent size) also make great knickers.

Now my girls can dance around with a little extra coverage that little girls require.

dont look too close, they are rough and ready, but the girls dont care!

Sorry for the lack of blogging. But I struggle to write blogs without clear pictures of what I am talking about. But you must understand, when you have a 3.5 yo and a 5yo who will not stay still for photos, the photos are rather boring, or out of focus!

You get photos such as these

Pattern Olivia by Farbenmix. Fabric some sparkly polyester stretch stuff from Spotlight.

Not sure how it will wash up, but mainly for dress ups anyway, its not everyday wear sort of fabric. Got the idea from Sara at Willow and Moo.

Rolled hem and cuffs using embroidery thread. I usually iron up the hems but as its polyester i didn't feel confident adding heat.

Since posting this I have been informed, by the mother of the owner of the pink one... that being my sister... that I have created a big rod for her back. Not only is it likely that Indi will love her new dress, but its unlikely she will ever take it off. Its her new sleep in, play clothes, have bath in dress.

in a few years, she will be totally up with what looks good, what is the latest fashions. So for now, gumboots, tracksuit pants, a dress, a tee and a bag... that is perfectly acceptable attire around here.

Soon she will be telling me what I should wear...

Been a little while since a blog update.

Mainly as there has been too much of nothing happening here.

The too much part is we went on holidays - yay- photos to come.
The nothing part includes going back to school and working.

do you ever reminisce of the days were school and kinder runs didnt exist? Getting out of bed was often met with a 2yo and 3yo dancing in 3mt of milk in the middle of the kitchen floor, and a baby with a pooey nappy but hey, I didnt have to get them dressed! I could stay in my PJs all day, sit and breasfeed babies as my boys ran amuck. And let me tell you they did run amuck!

Today my morning is met with a "mum its 7" by one kid, while another kid has to be dragged out of bed at 8.30 (yes school starts at 9!). Usually then its the race to see who can get dressed, find their shoes (yes I put them in the shoe box last night) make lunches, find readers (yes I put them in my bad when you asked me to last night)... still havnt found the other school parker!
It was finding something for lunch for the 5yo whos kinder is nut free, but who doesn't eat vegetables but loves nutella or peanut butter sandwiches (she got honey). And the baby monkey who thinks she deserves chocolate for breakfast (lunch and dinner)

Life is different here now to what is was a few years ago. We know have a more defined view of what our kids needs are, but also have more of an understanding that our kids needs are more complicated than what the book says.
I dont have to wash or change nappies, but I do have 2 boys 2 girls and 1 toilet! How many rolls of toilet paper can you go through in 1 week!
Toilet training and night training has been achieved, but so is pulling over on the freeway to pee!
No more breatsfeeding... but I miss it!
No more getting up overnight (did you hear that miss Lily?) But am waking up overnight often with a few extra people in our bed!
Putting their own seat belts on! Wow that was a milestone! (ever had to do up 4 seat belts every time you get into and out of a car)
Shopping is still a nightmare. But as far as I know, that is just children in general.

sigh... life is changing. How I cope I dont know. But it is fun. Each day has its challenges, each day has its rewards. Each child is a shining individual and have so many glittering facets. I am their mother.

when mum says get dressed, anything with hearts matches, even if its red and pink.

that any pants that fit your waist fit perfectly

its a must that it has a motorbike on it

And if you pedal your bike going down hill on a dirt road- it really hurts when you lose control and face plant.

Modified Olivia- tutorial

This is a modified version of the Olivia pattern by Farbenmix. If you have girls this is a must have pattern. So easy and quick. Typical me- instant satisfaction dress.

I was looking for a way to use only 50cm of my favourite knit fabric, yet still make a dress. So here is my effort. I was inspired by this one that I saw on Flickr. Sorry if you cant see it, but I cant find the blog address for this talented seamstress.
This fabric is JNY knits and also stella from Crafty Mamas

Started with the bodice of the Olivia dress. I just traced the front and then copped it off straight about 4cm under the arm.

Traced it out onto some more tracing paper to make the whole bodice.

Ruled a line from one shoulder to the bottom. I lined it up with the outer shoulder seam. I also filled in the part of the neck that was left with no paper.
The 2 lines are an error. There should only be one line.

Cut along the line

cut 2 in the opposite. If you are using directional fabric make sure that you notice the direction (yes saying this from experience). Also add a seam allowance on the bodice and skirt so that you can sew them together. I didnt add any seam allowance to the neck as it would have made the neck too small.

Cut out the back as per normal (just the bodice part), sew the shoulders together, and then add your neck binding. I did the traditional neck binding, but you can do it just right sides together, it just means that you would add a seam allowance and top stitch. I did sretch the binding slightly, but not as much as I would on a normal neck.

pin is all together and sew along your stitch line where you top stitched the binding. Make sure that the join at the intersection is sewn well, as there will be a lot of pressure on that seam.

then sew your pocket onto the skirt
attach your front skirt and back skirt, and top stitch.
add your sleeves. I did 2 tone sleeves.
The new from your hem right around to the end of the sleeve. Make sure that your seams match at the bodice and under the arm. You may want to use wonder tape of loads of pins.
Hem as per normal.

Yes that is right, I made 5 imkes over the past few weeks.

Imke is by Farbenmix, and you can either buy the pattern serperatly, or you can buy it as part of Sewing Clothes Kids Love. Its a wonderful versatile top for both girls and boys.

so my 5 are out of focus, but ill show you a close up of my favs.

and of course my girls versions.

The fabrics on these was Stella from Crafty Mamas, as well as some Campan and some other knits from Crafty Mamas. Ribbon is Farbenmix and embroideries by Huups.

So last week the girls got into my fabric. Pulled the entire fabric stash out. It should be noted that the husband was so kind to put it all back into the cupboard in perfect shoved style.

Opening the cupboard I noticed that there was an odd presence- something that is not usually in my stash.

I am a blogger and i didn't take any photos that I can share with you!

The reason for this is that the sewing that I did was mainly boring stuff!

Cant really take interesting pictures of what I made.

14 pairs of flannel PJ pants that I made from flannel that I picked up at Sl at the end of season sales. Never again will I make PJ pants (famous last words hey!) but yet again- I think the kids wil never again need any more!

I also made some PJs out of a spandex rib knit from Crafty Mamas- and oh they are so lovely! The boys wanted to wear them all week! Really want to make a pair for me.

Ottobre top that Lily wont wear! It has frills at the back, and in her 3yo wisdom she thinks that the frills go at the front, so it wont fit her properly.

So I have done some major stash busting. My next project is some yarn work (knitting/ crochet) and also to make a top that fits me properly!

This little dress is georgeous, and so easy to make! The pattern is by THE TRAIN TO CRAZY. Its a free pattern, but you do need to have a top that fits your subject on hand otherwise would might get stuck. There is no guide on how gathered to make the neck, or how gathered to make the cap sleeve. Saying that you cant really mess it up either, unless you make the neck too tight.

Fabric is by Michael Miller and some spandex knit I had hanging around here.

And of course every 3yo knows how to play games on the ipod/pad/phone!

I must say, she loved the dress. She didn't take it off all day. T hats a good sign!

Sewing marathon item 1- Jalie 2910

I have been on a bit of a sewing marathon. Sewing manly simple things, but things that I have wanted to do none the less. Also in order to make a dent into my fabric stash!

This is jalie 2910, cross over top. Although I am impressed with this pattern (the sizing is from kids to adults) I am not overly impressed with the way that it fits me. I dont think it is meant for awquard figure that is me. (meaning shallow shoulders, small back and big diameter)

I might try and adjust it so that the neck line is wider on my shoulders, and fit it so that the v sits lower on my chest. The shoulder seam is not meant to sit on my shoulders. I got a fright when the back arm hole was so much bigger than the front... but this is why!

Luckily I didnt try it on my favourite fabric. Only thing is that the green looks a little like the scrubs they wear in thetre at a hospital. Never mind. Its comfy and the front doubles over so it warm too.

Just as a follow up, the more I look at this picture and think about it the more I think that I will not make this pattern again. I wish to sell it and move on if anyone wants to try it for themselves. Its an easy pattern and as long as you are not a G cup then you would probably fit it fine.

An industrial sewing machine! I have no idea how to use an inductrial sewing machie, and I have to get the techy man to come and get it set up first, so it wont be getting a work out for a couple of weeks- but oh so excited.

Also a cutting table, its bigger tan a ping pong table. And of course it makes a great dancing table!

A few vintage machines that just need a little scrub. And they still work too!

Well the night after the Royal Wedding, the biggest party of my daughters childhood happened. And to me what she wore was of almost as much importance as what the Royal bride wore.

Pitty I didnt get it finished on time properly... guess I am not fit to be a Royal designer! Yes the buttons are falling off!

anyway. Ottobre 1/2008 vest, Juju embroidery on the back in sparkly fabruc

Rara skirt by Young Image Spring/ Summer. I actually changed the pattern quite a lot to make it easier (or more logical anyway). Made the waistband and bodice of skirt (whats it called?) out of knit instead of woven. It worked out better imo. Basically its just the top of the skirt, with a waist band. Then the body is a-line, and you do 3 ruffles and attach it to the a-line skirt evenly.

I would have liked to make a tee to match but ran out of time.

Today we had a fifth birthday party for Ellise.

We had party food, all pink green and silver. And becuase I was the host, i didnt get any photos! Not to mention that I had it at 10am, so there was no downtime prior!

Balloons, cupcakes, pink and green lollies, crowns as well as a pony!

This is the version I made for Ellise. Fabric spandex french terry, and jersey. Embroidery by huups. The main thing I learnt from this, as the neck is just turned, you need to take extra care not to stretch it. I used a walking foot second time around.

This is such an easy design to trace then sew up! I did 2 in one night! And its so effective. Whether you have an embroidery machine or not, you can jazz it up and tone it down!

the Eddie Cap tutorial can be found here. Its quite easy. I have to admit, doing the pleats was not that easy, well it wasnt hard, maybe fiddly is more of an accurate term. And the way I did the band is a little different to how the instructions said.

The buttons are from Tessa Ann. Arnt they georgeous! Perfect for a budding rock star!

The little man is a wonderful friends son who has just turned 5. Happy Birthday!

I used this pattern that is really easy. Next tiem I will use the magic look method to begin as the method that I used made it butte ugly! I actually didnt follow the pattern, as I kept loosing count. So I just short of made it up till I had the req amount of stitches. Also its in `16ply and with 6mm hook, so it came together in about 2 hours (and this is my first project!)

very happy with myself.

Now to do a flower of something so that the princesses will wear it.

in about 4 weeks our darling little firstborn daughter is turning 5!

The time has flown!

Her birthday also coincides with easter and ANZAC day. So apart from her 1st birthday she hasnt really had a birthday party before.

So this is her/ our opportunity!

So we want to have a good birthday party for her.

But how is that done?

Our other kids birthday parties we have tended just to have a heap of kids over, buy some sausages and let them run around. I dont really think that cuts it this time.

We are planning on hiring either a mobile farm or a pony ride for the kids. But what about food? Do I just do the average cup cakes and fairy bread, or should I buy the fancy ones? What is fancy? I think anything beyond just sausages and bread is fancy, but I want something that they are going to remember.

Well its not quite over, so really as this has really flown I dont want to wish it away.

But in the absence of blogging every few days thought that I would give insight to my February.

Starting school- one in prep, one in grade 1

I had a hair cut and turned another number

my baby girl started kinder (not my bubba- my third child is nicknamed baby girl)

I made a pair of Dortje pants and a Rendondo

and learnt to crochet

we went to a birthday part and played pass the parcel

and climbed up play equipment

and danced in georgous fabric

lastly, Melbourne and Victoria was flooded

So I tried to crochet- and I think I am addicted!

I also had my hair cut, but am too chicken to put the photo up of it, I might get my DH to take one with the good camera, that has a better chance of getting a good photo!

edited, I got one now!:

when i went to pick up my girls from FDC, Lily looked at me puzzled, then pointed out "new earings?", no honey, new haircut. Ellise looked, kept playing, then looked up again, smiled and said "where is my mummy?"

I am really happy with the do, and i have had non stop compliments since too!

DH bought me the top for my birthday, not bad taste i recon!

I have tried and tried to crochet in the past, always getting frustrated and throwing in the towel. I have been reassured on many occasions that it is easy! So why cant I do it! I love the look of crochet beanies!

So I am armed with a large download limit on my computer (for You tube), my sewing machines are going in for a service on Monday, so they cant distract me, and I will let You Tube teach me to crochet!

Its the little girls birthday coming up soon! And of course she is frilly and pink. So what should I do?

Feliz of course

Now we all know that a project this size cannot be completed without some sort of stuff up! Such as ruffling 3.5mt of purple gingham instead of the pink!

And then of course you have to chose the colours of the bias to hem it with... white, pink, purple! And of course 'they' don't sell powder pink bias anymore, making the colour choice that much more interesting... I turned to the white bias!

So it will be 5.5mt + 3.5mt (9mt) of ruffles plus 5.5mt + 3.5mt+ 3.5mt (12.5mt) of bias! that's not including the 3.5mt that I ruffled by accident!

Well its either the bias or I am making best friends with my rolled hem. Not yet fully decided on that.

sorry OL- it will probably be the bias.

Lets hope I finish this soon, as I still have a chair bag and library bag to complete!

Summer days: the beach!

We have been a little slack in taking the kids to the beach. te idea of sand between the thighs, in the hair and up the nose has put me off. But there comes a time where we need to put these things aside and just pack a could of towels, a few drink bottles (and about $50 for fish and chips) and head down to the coast!

It was Lilys first time at the beach too... it was like it was her 1000th!

Us adults did spend most the time splashing, putting hats back into heads, smothering sun screen, running after Ellise as she fearlessly waded into water and supervising the bigger boys jumping off the pier.

for this reason we dont have many photos, and I will say with much disappointment, I didn't bring my camera! All these were taken on my phone. In my defense, I didnt want to get sand in it!

It was the most glorious afternoon, very little wind, just warm enough for the beach, but not hot! I am so glad that I put aside my bias and took the plunge!

Ottobre Sudoku skirt X2!

These were meant to be finished prior to Christmas, but playing a little of fabric chicken (as apposed to yarn yardage chicken which is when you are not totally sure if you have enough yarn for a project) anyway, I ran out of fabric for the ruffle on the bigger skirt. So the project got out on the back burner untill I figured out what to do.

Not a good thing to do! When I did finally get the fabric, I got all excited and started sewing it all together. Put them on the girls, presented it to all my Crafty Mamas, and realised that each piece is meant to be a different height! EEEKKKKK!

Not sure if you can see it here or not, but this is the other one I made a couple of years ago.

On my doorstep a few weeks ago was a parcel. I bolted inside and ripped it open. Inside was some georgeous fabric from the lovely supermum Karen. She saw this and thought of me and my girls. I tell you what, when someone thinks about you like that, it makes you feel like a million bucks!

Then a few weeks later I received a parcel from a shop which I frequent- Crafty Mamas! Inside was the new pattern from Make It Perfect- Afterglow. Thank you Mrs Crafty Mama!

Saw the pattern, saw the fabric, the 2 were perfect for each other.

This pattern was a little more tricky to do than I first thought, but now I have had a go, the next one will be easy.

The placket at the back, sew the facing on BEFORE you cut it...

I did cheat and use ready made bias, home made bias and me dont tend to get along.

Then we added a little feature hem at the bottom just coz I could (well my sister did it, I cant take credit for that part)

So I very cute, and easy play dress. Perfect for any woven cotton fabric that you want to show off!

December challenge: Sharpen your skills!

So its December- it only took me to the 2nd to actually come to accept that it might be the final month of the year.

This months challenge is to sharpen your skills on one of the challenges that was presented this month.

I would really love to have another go at making a softy this month, but the reality is that I have 2 girls to sew for, a son whos birthday is the 26th of December and a neice and nephew to sew for for Christmas. Is it ok to say that the skills that are being sharpened at my house are time management?

Would love to hear what your December plans are.

My daughters are wanting (well I plan to make them) a ruffle patchwork skirt from Ottobre, as well as a Farbenmix Feliz
I should make my son a pair of denim shorts with the feature pocket.
My nephew needs a tee with mathicn shorts
and my neice, well she is fussy, I am thinking maybe she will get something I haven't sewn. Typical 2yo, she knows what she likes, but doesn't tell us.

Last year the end of the year snuck up on me and unfortunately I didn't get the chance to spoil the people who had done alot of 'work' for us.

People such as teachers, kinder teachers, and others who had helped us on the journey of 2009. So this yea I have decided to spoil them!

Many of the same people have been in our lives this year, so it made it alot easier.

I have made a journal with an embroidered cover and ribbon, as well as a key fob for those who have really helped alot this year. The ribbons are Farbenmix, Spotlight and others from Crafty Mamas, Love Chirps embroidery from Huups, Flowers from JuJu.

For those who have given my children lifts from school, making it possible for me to work a little, and also given me a break from driving (with 2 kinder runs to different kinder and a school run it can be rather exhausting), the teacher/ assistant who is willing to have time for me at the drop of a hat. The kinder workers that have spent more time on 'us' than I will ever know. And of course then there are those who have just lent us support!

And then there is the swimming instructors, the person who smiled at me when I was feeling down, the work colleague who listened.

I might also buy some fresh cut soaps to go with some of these, as I am finding it hard to resist the need to share her art! (I just hope they are not thinking that I think they smell! Coz they don't!)

I must thank Sara (Willow and Moo) for showing me where to find the tools to make the key fobs. And also for getting the ball rolling with the journal covers. My sister also helped with her graphic design talent.

Can you think of a reason why?

I know I struggled with the idea, it looks rather daggy, although credit that they are colour co-ordinated!

Its so that you dont get sand in your pants when your playing in the sandpit!

So the whole idea for November challenge is to start on that Christmas crafting. It might be a Christmas outfit for your darling boy, or it might be the present for his teacher. Whatever it is, November is the time to get started (or sooner). Either way, we would love to see what you are doing.

31st of Blogtoberfest: a new way to use Ottobre 301

I really like the drop waist ModKid pattern, so inspired but didn't want to purchase the pattern myself, and felt that I could alter an existing pattern:

So out popped the Ottobre 301, shortened it, made a waistband, then added a rectangle for a skirt.

Very happy with the results.

Next time I will make the sleeves a little more baggy, might even make them puffed sleaves, but apart from that, im very happy with the results.

The FlyLady is a web site dedicated to helping keep your life and house in order somewhat. It uses the acronym CHAOS or cant have anyone over syndrome.

The morning routine suggested is (taken from the daily emails):

Pattern: Ottobre 301 with added length

binding, and old adults spaghetti strap top from Op shop

Unwilling model, my 4yo daughter, who would not co-operate!

This recreate thing is actually really handy! The whole top cost me 50c I think. I have been rummaging through op-shops looking for any top with 2 way stretch, making sure it was big enough to make another top out of. and then chopping. It helps that it had stripes as I used that as the grain line.

The pattern took me about 30min to sew up!

Another bonus is that the sleeves didn't need hemming. I just used the existing sleeves, and used their hem as my hem ;)

I have also made knickers out of op-shop clothing.

So thats my October challenge completed YAY for me! (and nope photos wont behave!)

I see it in the school car park- the mummies frantically doing their daughters hair trying to get the knots out, and I see it often with other mummies of little girls.

Those knots created by the back of the head rubbing on the pillow.

Now we have a solution here, if anyone wants to join in... teach the daddies how to plait!

While us mummies are running around at the gotta clean up dinner so I can go and craft rush, daddies can sit and plait hair

It saves the morning knots!

Either that or buy a satin pillowcase ;)

20th of Blogtoberfest: thinking of Christmas

I missed yesterday, sorry to those who were hanging out waiting for my daily blog post ;)

Anyway, I have been thinking about Christmas. It is slightly scary to think that its only 2 months away.

I was thinking of gifts for people. Who do you give gifts to? What sort of gifts?

I'm talking aside from the general mother, brother, kids, partners. School teachers, aides, the lady who says hello in the car park?

And what do I give? I really love the soaps from Fresh Cut Soaps, but how do others feel when they receive a block of soap? I know how much they cost and how perdy they are, but wrapped up in a little bit of cellophane, do they look more meaningful than a box of Roses chocolates? Or does it portray, you smell and need a bath?

I always thought that a pair of fancy socks were a lovely present in high school. That's the sort of gift that was often given at a birthday- a pair of socks and a facial scrub- or something like that. When I met my husband he was horrified! I still think this is a nice present, he doesn't!

I'm not sure that I have the time to make everyone something from my sewing machine, otherwise I might churn out 8 note books.

Anyway, what do you think?

18th of Blogtoberfest: working with wood

At the festival that we went to yesterday they had a stall, where for $5 you bought some pieces of wood, and together with some volunteers, the boys got to put them together.

I actually didn't get any photos of their finished products. Mitch made a tool box and Tyler made a box with a lid. I was very impressed! Thank you to those who volunteered to give us the opportunity to make such a thing.

17th of Blogtpberfest: festival

We went to a local festival today, first time we had attented, and we were suprisingly impressed.

The girls loved the rides, The ones of them smiling wouldn't load for some reason.

the boys chose a big slide. What the picture doesn't show (apart from legs sticking up in the air) is that the slide was soaking wet, and the bottom was full of puddles. Making 2 very wet (from head to the tip of their toes) soaking wet! They thought it was the best thing ever!

Then Elise decided that she wanted to have a go on the go-carts, and climbed the barrier to have a go. Thankfully the attendant let her have a go and she peddled her way around like she had done it all before!

We came home exhausted, with 4 very tired kiddies, but knowing that we will be visiting again next year!

16th of Blogtoberfest: Langeness

With my sudden swollen tummy and painful belly button, I have been somewhat sluggish in getting back into sewing.

Well a few nights ago I cut out my Farbenmix Langeness . Its a 3 panel (I think its 3, its 3 front and 3 at the back) a-line skirt. Mine is just a denim skirt, but I really like it. I changed it slightly to suit my painful bellybutton and ... well... I haven't taken it off! I was going to do the hem panel but it would have looked a little cover-up-ish so I chose not to. The waist I did a 35cm yoga waistband instead of a zip. Next port of call I think ort to be to hassle jean brands to make their jeans with yoga waistband! You might actually see me wearing jeans to school drop off if they made a pair of Lee jeans like this! (and not just maternity ones)

16th of Blogtoberfest- round trip of 150km+

I have just got back from a friends 30th birthday party. My mother was kind enough to bub sit for us so that DH and I could go together.

Waiting there for us was the birthday boy, and his wife and kids, his large extended family and also some other friends of ours. Its always nice to get together with these people. His family are friendly, and its great to catch up with our friends with no kids, even if its just giggling about the antics of our partners (or ourselves)

eating food, eating cake (and sticky date!)

then for the birthday boy to blow out his candles and officially jointhe 30 and over club, a few speeches, kisses and cuddles and then the trip back home.

It was welll worth travelling the 150km to celebrate his birthday.

Farbenmix Vida, and some Farmers market. Its for a little stash busting.

Farmers market is that fabric that I horde as I really really love it! But its a few years old now, and really whats the use of some fabric folded up and shoved into a cupboard. So off to create something out of it!

And of course when stash busting you realise that you don't have exactly what you want, and so put the cal out for xyz Farmers Marker to compliment your own. Thank you to those who came to my rescue.

13th of Blogtoberfest- whats your genre?

Was having a d&m with my crafty buddy Sara about what sort of fabrics that we usually purchase. What sort of fabric do we dive for when its on special? What fabric do we line up in cues to get? What fabric do we know we will like before we even lay eyes on it?

For Sara this is Euro fabrics. She knows how to use it, how to make it work, and personally she does a really good job of it too! She manages to put together fabrics that I would never have thought of. And then the look is amazing!

Another blogger who sticks out is Kate. Everything but the thread is exactly that, everything is made out of vintage sheets, table cloths etc.. When I walk into the op shop I don't see things tat go together or are suitable for clothing, yet Kate makes it work so well! I am going to have to learn for this months challenge!

So on reflection what is my genre? I tend to sew some Euro fabrics, quilters cotton, poly cotton, cotton knits, denims... And after trawling through and through my blog attempting to find a theme I concluded that (next to not having a genre) that my genre is

wait for it

denim ;)

I don't even think that that is a genre LOL!

Monday is my kid free day. When I say kid free, its often filled with appointments, shopping, phone calls, swimming lessons (for the 2 boys) so I don't actually remember the last time I crafted on it.

Anyway, my point in ponder today...

I am still not up to my normal self, which has meant a lot of sitting on a chair looking around me thinking.. what a mess!

On the floor next to me is cut up bits of paper from the kids craft, the floor desperately needs attention, clothes need washing, the table needs clearing, kids beds need to be stripped and changed, as does ours. Need I go on... I think you get the picture.

I am not about to start pushing myself to clean, as I know that it will hurt... but I have started to do a little bit. DH is outside mowing the lawn, clipping back trees (read fire proofing) raking, fixing the roof that was removed while we gained a new roof truss, he has been out there all day flat out! He is excellent around the house, but I am not able to gain any more practical time from him, he is stretched already!

The job to maintain a house is a full time job... but I also want to craft. I want to bring out my scrap booking that I haven't touched in about 6 years. I want to sew my Farbenmix Langeness, I want to make my girls some summer pretties, I want to knit myself this vest!

I also know that my kids need me to read to them, to run around the backyard with them (not today as it will hurt, I might just sit on the deck and watch) and cut and paste, and play dough... just reflecting on my own childhood, my kids wont remember what their home looked like, but they will remember what time I spent with them.

this however brings me no comfort to how my house appears.

is it possible for a mother with 4 young kids (2 who require added attention) to have it all?

So I have finally finished a WIP for my little girls. A denim Ottobre dress with wooden buttons and ribbon. I really love the results, and so do the girls...

9th of Blogtoberfest Appendix

well this my explain why I went from 6Th of Blogtoberfest tot he 9th... I missed a few days.

A few days ago I got a pain in my belly, it became less painful after about 20min so I didn't think much more of it. But I still could not walk properly, and the following day a school mum convinced me to go to the GP (instead of kinder duty) so off I trotted... and then he felt it was important to go to the hospital for some bloods just to rule out appendicitis.

I have had this pain before, and last time (2y ago) they felt that it was my ovaries, so again I was just expecting the same. Well you can imagine the shock when my blood tests suggested that I had an inflamed appendix!

So after a day of knitting, waiting and watching daytime TV I was given keyhole surgery. I was still unsure of what was wrong with me, as the pain had completely subsided.

After the surgery I went back to the ward. I cant really remember that much, only that I was very impressed that I didn't feel sick after the anaesthetic. The surgeon came in and explained to me that my appendix was in a very odd spot, which was masking the pain,but was inflamed and given a few more days I would have needed to be admitted for much longer as it would have probably burst! So I am very grateful to the Dr who was persistent with getting me to surgery.

So now I am hobbling around the house, DH is ensuring that the kids don't jump on me, and bringing me pain relief when I need it. Holding my tummy when I cough, and still quite sleepy. But I am recovering well!

My Second born is a wizz on the computer program- LEGO. I must admit both the boys are really, but I only have a photo of Tyler

this is what he built (its a hellicopter with 2 men flying off the back) he has to select each lego peice and then place each one where it needs to go. No help from me or anyone else, just thought it up himself and built it.

When I was younger I would cope with daylight savings just fine. I would go to bed when I was tired and get up when I was needed. Being a nurse you have no body clock. Some days you start work at 7, others you start at 1 but finish at 9.30 at night (and then start again at 7) and then others you started at 9pm and finished at 7.30am!

Now you would think that being a mother would have some sort of a similar effect on you, but I think I am beginning to realise, that although as a mother you are sleep deprived, but there is some vague routine in there. And its more of a routine that I have ever had prior to kids. I know that I get up about the same time each day, and even though I go to bed way too late, it is somewhat predictable. It is unpredictable how many interruptions I will get overnight.. but they are gorgeous kids and I know that id rather this interruptions rather then waking at 2am wondering if they were home yet.

Anyway, my ramble is because I am finding as i get older I struggle more and more with this 1h difference in time that comes about in October. I am looking at the clock at almost 1am rather than midnight. I am waking at 8.30 instead of 7.30am. thank goodness that school doesn't start till Wednesday otherwise we would have been very late!

I also found a grey hair!

2nd of Blogtoberfest: manual settings of my camera

So I am right at the beginning of my journey to become the world famous photographer- of my house anyway. Went a visited a lovely Clair Bremner today who I thought was going to teach us the manual settings of a camera.

It was actually went beyond just learning the manual settings on a camera. We actually got to practice taking pictures of a gorgeous little 15m old girl - where it was difficult to take a bad picture! And also a larger family of 5 kids.

We had the opportunity to take photos of other kids other than my own without the expectation of being able to look at the photos or the pressure to take a valuable photo. So we could stand there and get muddy knees, get up close and personal with the camera, ask Clair questions, and bounce ideas of each other. All these things that I cant do from reading a web site and taking photos of my own children.

Blogtoberfest is where a community of bloggers, hosted by {tinniegirl} have a month of blogging everyday. the lovely CurlyPops is hosting all the giveaways, and I might even just have a giveaway myself. Just gotta get creative and find something generic to give away.

Anyway, this is also coinciding with me wanting to improve my camera skills, so you just might get a few days of experimental photography.

October challenge, re-create, re design something from the op shop.

So this months challenge is to get down to your local op shop, buy 1, 2 or 3 items and to create something new out of it.

I have before got some awsome knit fabrics and made knickers for my girls using the That Darn Kat pattern. I think I will be doing this again. I have also got some really over sized cord pants and made some little pants, but they didn't turn out as I had hoped. And then there is the bags that you can make from old jeans. Really your only limited by you! So get a hop on down to your op shop and bring home some new ideas for creations

embroidered skirt that didnt turn out as i expected

This is a simple little skirt that I made for my niece. But unfortunately it didn't turn out as I expected it would, so it has happily found a new home.

a couple of embroidered flowers that are stitched onto felt then sewn on.

A ruffled hem, with 20 denier nylon under the skirt to give it a girly feel.

The lady 4yo of the house happily picked it up and would not take it off, a good sign that she likes it!

And really if it fits my 4yo I don't think its going to fit my 2yo niece who my husband describes as a pocket rocket!

My big boy is now 7. That's 7 years from when he was a baby, and 3 years from being double figures! He is growing up so fast.

We wrapped his presents the night before, and put them on his bedroom floor, so no photos of him opening them, but he did come running in proclaiming his approval of his shorts that I had made.

A new toy!

A couple of weeks ago my lovely husband came home to tell me that he had bought me a suprise. Me, being me, had to know what he was up to. A Canon 450D! I was absolutely stoked!

So now I am learning a new craft. And I am really really enjoying it. Its instant (if you dont need to edit!) and the results are so rewarding.

itch decided today that he wanted to be a dude. Now my interpretation of this word is one that he doesn't know, so I am assuming that he means "cool", "skater", a little bit "surfy".

We went out to the local big shopping centre and he became very picky with what he wanted to wear. The finishing touches were a hat that was worn sideways and a 1 handled bag backpack. We visited a few shops to try and get a taste of what he considered "dude' clothing was, complete with hand gestures!

So (sew) its September already. I know myself and a few others are in denial about how fast the year is going... can we please pretend that its an extension of August?

Well at the end of the day, I guess time goes on whether we are ready or not.

So ready or not but here comes September challenge, to make a bag.

Now the bag could be for yourself (like mine will be) or for someone else (which is the one I will pull out if I should not get mine done one time)

I have made the Buttercup bag here from Made By Rae, and also my lates "your turning 5 and your a girl" present is the Messenger bag here by mmmcrafts,. I have also made the Grand Revival Flea market bag, Melly and Me Sherbet bag, also own the lickerty lick bag from Made By Rae, if your up for a really big challenge you can try the Farbenmix ElPorto .

I myself am going to make myself a Messenger bag. The other ones that I have made are sized differently to those in the pattern from mmmcrafts, and I have modified this and that as well. Not sure if I will stick to instructions or not, only that I will add a zipper... yikes!
